What time do shops and amenities close in Piombino and nearby?

Shops that sell clothes, accessories, jewellery, etc. usually open at 9:30am and close for lunch between 1pm and 4pm. The evening closing time is 7:30 or 8pm. The same applies to pharmacies. Supermarkets are open throughout the day from 7:45am to 8:30pm. Sundays and Mondays are considered festive days for some businesses so reduced hours may apply.

Where can I buy food and essentials?

If you don’t want to go out for lunch and dinner, local delis and supermarkets are a great option. At supermarkets like COOP and Conad you’ll find fridge aisles with sandwiches and ready-made food as well as huge deli counters where you can choose your preferred bread type, what to stuff it with, and the shop assistant will prepare the sandwiches (panini) for you. This is a very affordable option.

COOP Salivoli is just a 10 minute walk from RTA Marina di Salivoli apartments. Address: Piazza Berlinguer, 57025 Piombino LI, Italy

Are credit and debit cards accepted everywhere?

Businesses like hotels, holiday homes, shops and restaurants will accept payments by card. However, smaller businesses like a tiny grocery shop or the bakery may ask if you can pay by cash so it’s advisable to have some cash on hand just in case.

Are public toilets widely available in Tuscan towns?

In smaller towns like Piombino you won’t find traditional public toilets. If you’re out and about and need access to one your best bet is to walk into a bar/cafe, order something to drink and ask to use the toilet. Just walking into an establishment and heading for the loo is usually never allowed as these are for customers only. In bigger cities like Florence you’re likely to find public toilets: these are usually not free, so bring with you some Euro coins. Some beach establishments also charge 50 cents or 1 EUR to use their toilet facilities, but some are free.

What time do restaurants shut?

In big cities some restaurants will stay open throughout the day, but in smaller towns like Piombino they are only open around meal times and will be closed in the middle of the day. Typical dinner time is no earlier than 7:30pm so finding a table at 6pm will be a challenge.

Why have I been charged for water at the restaurant?

Tap water is perfectly safe to drink in Italy, but no one really does that, and restaurants don’t serve tap water. If you go out to eat and ask for water expect to be served a bottle, which will appear in your bill.
